There are touch sensors on each earbud for media controls. The case itself takes about 2 hours to charge using the provided Micro-USB cable that plugs to the bottom of the case.Ĭompared to the 5-6 hour playtime of the AirPods, the Sound Mates earbuds definitely fall behind in that area. So if you are an office worker or someone looking to use these for extended periods of time, well, know that these will die shortly into your listening session.Ĭharging them is easy, just place them back in the case and wait for about 1 hour to get them back up to full charge. It’s unfortunate that the Sound Mates earbuds only last for 2.5 hours of playtime. You’re definitely very unlikely to run into pairing issues on a more premium pair of earbuds like the AirPods. Overall, the pairing experience is okay but can definitely be better. If that happens, you can try resetting the earbuds by placing them back into the charging case and waiting a few minutes to try the pairing exercise again. Now, there have been lots of reports from people that they run into pairing issues where the earbuds don’t pair to each other. You should hear audio coming out of the earbuds to indicate that pairing is complete. After that’s done, go to your smart device and navigate to the Bluetooth section and pair your device with “Tzumi Soundmates”. You should hear a couple of beeps when they pair together. Simply take the earbuds out of the case and wait until they pair to each other. Pairing these earbuds is fairly straightforward and takes about 15-30 seconds to complete. Which is actually the case on these earbuds, there definitely isn’t much stuttering or audio cut offs while using them normally. The Sound Mates do come with Bluetooth version 5.0, which means they should have a longer range and a more reliable connection. So my recommendation would be to expect to use the mic for quick calls or voice controls only. You will find that the mic does pick up background noise and will sometimes produce an echo. The microphone is good, but frequently inconsistent, especially if you are in a louder area. Tzumi did include a built-in microphone in the Sound Mates. So if you are using these for commuting or in public areas, then you’ll hear surrounding noise very often. The earbuds sit inside your ear but offer little to no ambient sound reduction. The sound quality definitely takes a hit as a result of their lack of noise isolation though. They have decent bass, a very clear sound profile and don’t lose that crispness at higher volumes. Now, they definitely won’t sound as good as the premium AirPods, but they certainly deliver decent sound quality. There isn’t much hollow-ness to how they sound and there isn’t any sound distortion at high volumes. When it comes to the Sound Mates earbuds, they actually sound decent for the price. If you have bought cheap or knock-off earbuds before, then you’re likely familiar with the “hollow” sound quality of some of the poor quality earbuds out there. There are a LED indicators in the case that let you know that they are charging as soon as you place them in the case. The earbuds fit into the cut outs within the case very nicely and stay in there via magnets. On the bottom of the case is the Micro-USB charging port where you can plug the case in for charging. Opening the case is easy and can be done with one hand. The case opens up from the top and is fairly secure and doesn’t open up if flipped upside down. The case looks very similar to the Apple case, however there is a distinct “stripe” like design on the Sound Mates. Tapping the earbuds on the backside results in different controls, that I detail below. On the backside of each earbud there are touch control sensors. The earbuds have a tiny metal ring around them, which is very obvious when looking at them, they are not “fully” white like the AirPods as a result. One thing to note is that the whole build of these earbuds is plastic and will feel a little cheap. One thing to keep in mind is that these don’t have eartips, so you can’t personalize their size and fit. They are a little thicker than the AirPods but will fit very securely inside your ear. The Sound Mates have a “barrel” shaped earbud that goes inside your ear canal, very much like the AirPods.
